Biography

Graca Machel is one of Africa's most revered figures — a former First Lady of both Mozambique and South Africa, a humanitarian leader of global stature, and a lifelong advocate for children's rights. Born in Incadine, Mozambique in 1945, she served as Mozambique's Minister of Education and Culture from 1975 to 1989, and is internationally known for her landmark 1996 United Nations report on the impact of armed conflict on children.

The 'Machel Report' — formally titled 'The Impact of Armed Conflict on Children' — transformed global consciousness about the plight of children in war zones, leading to the creation of the United Nations Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict. Her subsequent work through the Graca Machel Trust has focused on education, nutrition, and health for Africa's most vulnerable children.
