Dr. Joy Buolamwini is one of the most important voices in the global conversation about artificial intelligence and its impact on society. Born in Accra, Ghana, raised in Mississippi and a graduate of MIT's Media Lab, she founded the Algorithmic Justice League after discovering that commercial facial recognition systems consistently misidentified dark-skinned faces, particularly those of women.
## Exposing Algorithmic Bias
Buolamwini's research — exposing significant error rates in facial recognition systems by major technology companies including IBM, Microsoft, and Amazon when processing darker-skinned faces — triggered policy debates in legislatures across the United States and Europe, contributed to moratoria on facial recognition in several cities, and helped establish the centrality of bias testing and equity auditing in AI development.
