    In their words

Luxury is not what you add. It is the number of things you have removed so the guest never has to think.

Sofia Darwish-Haddad · Group Managing Director

    Biography

Sofia Darwish-Haddad has run hotels since she was twenty-three, beginning in front office at a large international property in Dubai and progressing through operations before taking her first general manager role at thirty-one. She now leads Almara Hospitality Collection, a group of independent properties and restaurants operating in the UAE and Oman.

The Almara positioning is a deliberate argument against the branded standardisation that dominates the Gulf. Each property is developed independently, with its own culinary direction and, in most cases, a locally sourced design team. Darwish-Haddad contends that a guest paying at the top of the market is paying for specificity, and that a room which could be in four cities is a discount product wearing an expensive price.

She is, by all accounts, an operator rather than a brand strategist. She reads the night audit. She has a documented habit of arriving at properties unannounced and eating in the staff canteen before the restaurant. Staff turnover at Almara is materially below the regional average for its segment, an outcome she attributes less to compensation than to scheduling discipline and the removal of what she calls performative service, rituals that consume staff attention without improving the day of the guest.

Her food and beverage programme has been the most visible success of the group, with several restaurants operating as destinations independent of their hotels. She has been vocal about supplier payment terms and about the treatment of kitchen staff, positions she frames in operational rather than moral terms: a kitchen with a stable brigade produces consistent food, and consistency is the entire product.

She serves on a tourism advisory panel and mentors early-career hoteliers through a regional programme.
