Biography

Antonio Guterres has served as the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations since 2017, leading the world's most universal international organisation through a period of extraordinary challenge including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine war, escalating climate emergencies, and deepening geopolitical fragmentation. Born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1949, he served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and as UN High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015.
