Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1954, he has advised over a hundred governments on economic transformation, helped design the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015, and through his work at Columbia University's Earth Institute and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network has been among the most visible advocates for ending extreme poverty and achieving sustainable prosperity.
## Shock Therapy To Sustainable Development
Sachs began his career advising post-Communist economies on market transitions — a controversial 'shock therapy' approach applied in Poland, Bolivia, and Russia. He then pivoted to a comprehensive framework for sustainable development that addressed not only economic policy but health, education, governance, and environmental sustainability as interconnected drivers of human progress.
