Biography
Mariana Mazzucato is one of the most influential economists in the world of innovation and public policy. Born in Rome, Italy in 1968 and raised in the United States, she is Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London and founding Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose. Her book 'The Entrepreneurial State' fundamentally challenged the notion that innovation is driven primarily by the private sector.

Mazzucato's central argument — that the state has historically been the investor of first resort in transformative technologies, from the internet to GPS, smartphones, and biotechnology — overturned the conventional wisdom that government should play a merely regulatory and facilitative role in innovation.
