Biography
Zainab Salbi is one of the most remarkable humanitarian entrepreneurs of her generation. Born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1969, the daughter of Saddam Hussein's personal pilot, she escaped an arranged marriage and built a new life in the United States, where she founded Women for Women International in 1993 — an organisation that has helped over half a million women survivors of war in conflict zones across Bosnia, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Iraq, and beyond.
## Women For Women International
Women for Women International provides a year of financial support, emotional care, rights education, and job training to women survivors of conflict, enabling them to rebuild their lives, support their families, and become agents of change in their communities. It has distributed over $180 million in direct aid and trained hundreds of thousands of women across the world's most fragile societies.
## Iraqi Heritage And Arab World Connection
Salbi's Iraqi heritage gives her a deeply personal connection to the Arab world and to the UAE's role as a safe harbour for millions of Arabs in flight from conflict.
