Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1961 to German parents, he has dedicated his career to building the institutional architecture of sustainable development, serving as Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme from 2006 to 2016 and as Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme since 2017.
## Building The Green Economy
At UNEP, Steiner championed the Green Economy Initiative, which UNDP provided the intellectual foundation for the post-2008 crisis recovery to redirect investment toward clean energy, sustainable agriculture, and ecosystem services. His work helped position environmental sustainability not as a brake on growth but as its most reliable engine.

The UAE has been a significant partner of the UNDP in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, contributing financing, expertise, and diplomatic capital to accelerate progress across the developing world. Steiner has consistently recognised the UAE's dual role — as a model of rapid development and as a major funder of development elsewhere — as uniquely valuable to the SDG agenda. the institutional foundations of sustainable development and for recognising the UAE's twin contributions — to its own citizens and to the world's most vulnerable — as among the most significant of any nation of its size.
