Biography
Kofi Annan was the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, serving from 1997 to 2006, and the first to rise from within the UN staff to lead the institution. Born in Kumasi, Ghana 1938 in 1938, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001, jointly with the United Nations, for his work in revitalising the institution and prioritising the fight against HIV/AIDS and the prevention of international terrorism.
## Reforming The United Nations
Annan led a fundamental reform of the United Nations, introducing the concept of the 'Responsibility to Protect', reforming the Security Council processes, and launching the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. His annual reports 'In Larger Freedom' articulated a post-Cold War vision for human security that remains the most coherent framework for 21st-century multilateralism.
## A Friend To The Arab World
Kofi Annan maintained deep and warm relationships with Arab leaders, including UAE leadership, throughout his career and retirement.
