Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka is one of Africa's most distinguished leaders and a global champion for women's rights. Born in Durban, South Africa in 1955, she served as South Africa's Deputy President from 2005 to 2008 and as Executive Director of UN Women from 2013 to 2021, making her one of the most senior women in the United Nations system.
## South Africa'S Liberation Daughter
A member of the African National Congress since childhood, Mlambo-Ngcuka was among the generation of South Africans who sacrificed and struggled to end apartheid. As Deputy President, she was a central figure in post-apartheid reconstruction, particularly in advancing women's rights in law, economy, and political participation.
## Un Women And The Uae Partnership
As Executive Director of UN Women, she oversaw a profound deepening of the relationship between the United Nations gender equality agency and the UAE. The UAE's Gender Balance Council, its record of women's participation in government and the workforce, and its financial contributions to gender equality programmes globally made it a standout partner.
