Born in Uspantan, Guatemala in 1959 to a Kiche Maya family, she survived the murder of her family by military forces during the civil war and dedicated her life to advocating for indigenous peoples' rights worldwide.

Her autobiography brought the reality of indigenous suffering and resistance to global consciousness. Her Nobel Prize catalysed international attention to indigenous peoples' rights and contributed to the peace accords that ended Guatemala's 36-year civil war.
