Biography
Dr. Vandana Shiva is one of the world's most influential environmental philosophers and activists. Born in Dehradun, India in 1952, she holds a PhD in philosophy of science and founded the Navdanya movement, which has conserved over 5,000 varieties of seeds, established over 150 seed banks across India, and trained over 900,000 farmers in sustainable agriculture.
## Seeds And Sovereignty
Shiva's foundational conviction — that biodiversity, seed sovereignty, and small-scale agriculture are the foundations of true food security and ecological health — has inspired sustainable agriculture movements across the world. Her critique of industrialised monoculture agriculture and GMO patenting as threats to farmer livelihoods and ecological resilience has shaped food policy debates across continents.
## Uae'S Food Security Mission
The UAE's extraordinary investment in food security technologies — indoor vertical farming, hydroponic agriculture, desert agriculture innovation, and global food supply chain diversification — aligns with the vision of resilient, technology-enabled food systems that Shiva has championed, albeit through different pathways.
