Biography
Wangari Maathai was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize awarded in 2004 for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy, and peace. Born in Nyeri, Kenya in 1940, she founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977 which planted over 51 million trees across Africa.
## The Green Belt Movement
What began as a simple act of planting trees became a global symbol of environmental and democratic activism. Maathai recognised that deforestation and poverty were linked to political powerlessness and that restoring the environment required restoring the dignity and political voice of communities.
