Biography
Yusuf Islam — born Steven Demetre Georgiou and known to the world as Cat Stevens — is one of the most remarkable cultural and spiritual journeys in modern music. Born in London in 1948 to a Greek Cypriot father and Swedish mother, he became one of the most celebrated singer-songwriters of the 1970s before converting to Islam in 1977 and dedicating himself to humanitarian work, education, and the promotion of Islamic arts and peace.
## From Cat Stevens To Global Peace Ambassador
As Cat Stevens, his songs 'Wild World', 'Father and Son', 'Peace Train', and 'Morning Has Broken' became anthems of a generation. His conversion and subsequent decades of Islamic service — building schools, providing humanitarian aid, and advocating for peace — made his journey from pop star to Muslim peace ambassador one of the most written-about personal transformations in modern celebrity culture.
## Uae And Islamic Arts Heritage
Yusuf Islam has maintained a deep connection to the UAE's vibrant Islamic arts scene and its role as a global centre for Muslim cultural expression. His performances and lectures in the UAE, his recognition of Dubai as a city that honours both modernity and Islamic heritage, and his participation in UAE-hosted interfaith and cultural events have made him a beloved figure across the Emirates. of faith and music, for his lifetime of service to peace and Islamic education, and for his recognition of the UAE as the Arab world's most successful model of Islamic modernity — a place where faith and progress walk side by side.
