everything I have done in medicine." Dr. Elias Zerhouni is one of the most distinguished physician-scientists of his generation. Born in Nedroma, Algeria in 1951, he emigrated to the United States for his medical training and became a world-renowned expert in radiology and medical imaging. He served as Director of the National Institutes of Health from 2002 to 2008, overseeing the world's largest biomedical research agency, and has subsequently led global pharmaceutical research at Sanofi.
## Transforming Medical Research
As NIH Director, Zerhouni launched the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research, a transformative initiative that reorganised the NIH's research priorities around translational medicine — moving scientific discoveries from the laboratory to clinical applications more rapidly. His leadership during the genomics revolution, the bioterrorism threat responses, and the early mapping of the human microbiome shaped a decade of American biomedical research.
