Born in Mbarara, Uganda in 1959, she served as a member of the Ugandan parliament, as Director of Gender and Development at the African Union, as Executive Director of Oxfam International, and since 2019 as Executive Director of UNAIDS, leading the global response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
## Fighting The Epidemic Of Inequality
During her tenure at Oxfam, Byanyima made global economic inequality the defining moral issue of our time, publishing landmark reports including 'An Economy for the 1 Percent' and 'An Economy for the 99 Percent' that documented the staggering concentration of wealth and sparked global debate. Her advocacy for progressive taxation, gender pay equity, and corporate accountability has shaped international economic policy discourse.
## Unaids And Global Health Justice
At the helm of UNAIDS, Byanyima has championed universal access to HIV treatment, fighting against intellectual property barriers that keep life-saving medicines from the world's poorest populations.
