Born in Mbarara, Uganda in 1959, she served as a member of the Ugandan parliament, as Director of Gender and Development at the African Union, as Executive Director of Oxfam International, and since 2019 as Executive Director of UNAIDS, leading the global response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

    During her tenure at Oxfam, Byanyima made global economic inequality the defining moral issue of our time, publishing landmark reports including 'An Economy for the 1 Percent' and 'An Economy for the 99 Percent' that documented the staggering concentration of wealth and sparked global debate. Her advocacy for progressive taxation, gender pay equity, and corporate accountability has shaped international economic policy discourse.
